Making expensive subscriptions, the hearts feature, locking new and old features behind paywalls, and shifting their overall focus from education to profit (I’m looking at you, Quizlet). It seems people only care now because Duolingo is using AI in general. A lot of the comment comments under a video about the situation weren’t even focusing on the worker aspect, rather, saying stuff like “AI shouldn’t be used in language learning; it’s a uniquely human thing!” When Google Translate has been a thing for over a decade and no one has said a thing about it. It's not fair how they keep taking away great free resources from students and monetizing them for their own gain. I have a Premium subscription and have had it for most of the time I have used Duolingo. I use Duolingo for practice, not as my primary source of learning. I also use the Brainscape app for Flashcards, using the decks that go with the Your German Teacher online courses. Although Duolingo will never displace Brainscape, I think the new flashcard sets on Duolingo are pretty great. But there is one thing that drives me crazy. When you are shown a flashcard, it should indicate whether the expected answer is a noun/adjective or a verb. For example, if you are shown "empty" both leer (like a bottle is empty) and ausräumen (to empty something) are correct. But if you guess leer and they are looking for a verb, you get the answer wrong. This would be an easy fix. Duolingo could either accept both answers as correct, as they often do when there is more than one adjective or noun with the same meaning. Or they could indicate whether they want a verb or not as the answer. P.S. I had a solid streak going. I even have subscribed to them on and off back when they had a good app. I genuinely liked it. But this? The new energy system? It completely destroys the experience. Not only do you lose energy for getting questions right, but it doesn’t give you enough to make it back when you get a streak of questions correct. Not only this, but even worse I finished a lesson with five out of 25 energy left and a little later without even touching the app it drained my energy to zero, preventing me from doing any more lessons or using my XP boost. Not only does it limit how much you can learn in a day it literally drains when you’re not even doing anything. This is awful. It isn’t about helping learners anymore. It’s all about creating artificial friction to push people into paying. And it completely killed my motivation to continue my streak, which is the exact opposite of what it was supposed to do. A few weeks ago, I was actually thinking about paying for super again. You use energy even on correct answers, if you wish the challenge of learning a language was combined with the anxiety of running out of gas this is for you. You recharge a bit with streaks but not enough to replace the regular drain. Used to be that a perfect streak meant I could do as many lessons as I could maintain, now three lessons is the max, then it’s ads or money. Seriously despicable, this isn’t gamification it’s monetization of what was the free service. For people with the intention of buying the premium frankly the service isn’t good enough to rationalize spending money on, and with unlimited hearts/energy there is no pressure to get anything right and you’ll just guess without retention because you can. I moved from mobile to PC to keep advancing without worrying about each mistake I make, but with the recent changes I feel like I'll never reach the hard parts without paying. I've a 1500+ day streak it'll be a bummer to lose, but if the site can't keep its "free education" promise based on ads, or a reasonably priced subscription, I can't imagine I'll keep using it for long. Maybe 30-45 minutes a day. It took a long time because I had to use my phone keyboard (which I'm really slow with). I kept thinking, "Anki isn't nearly as good as the people who recommend it claim. It seems to be missing a lot of the features. Maybe those features are only available on the computer version? Or maybe I'm using it wrong." I assumed that those extra features must be paywalled, so I paid for "AnkiApp Unlimited". Finally, I gave in and got (real) Anki on my computer. (It took me so long to do so because the current Anki isn't compatible with my OS, so I had to find which older version to download.) I thought, "why am I having trouble syncing? This is so frustrating! It says it doesn't recognize my account, not even my email? Must be bad design!" Then I found out that what I downloaded for my computer, the real Anki, is not associated with what I have on my Phone, AnkiApp. AnkiApp just stole the trademark (I thought that was illegal?) and confused me, a stupid consumer. The rating in the AppStore was good (4.7) and even higher than the original Anki mobile so I downloaded it thinking that it was a better version of the Anki mobile. After spending nearly half a year making around 50 decks of flashcards without any issues, I chose to upgrade it since I found it so user friendly. However, soon after, the app started to crash when I try to make a new card/open/sync/study or just simply stay in the app. After around 10+ emails to support, they finally replied and advised me to reinstall the app since all my data is in their cloud. AND THEY WERE WRONG, HALF OF MY FLASHCARDS ARE GONE. All the hours spent making those cards- wasted. And I couldn’t even download the ones that I had previously that WAS in the cloud since it told me that the deck is incomplete and can’t be downloaded. At least that's what i believe because it been days and i can't login to my account, or sync my other devices on IOS. And my tickets remain unanswered \- Admium corp. The company behind this atrocity, promises zero refunds and say that if your decks get "lost" or if your data got "corrupt" they won't be responsible. This means that if you have a lot of decks and suddenly you have no access to them because of some data breach or server crash, they won't give a shit. They also promise no refunds. ALSO ALSO they can close the servers whenever they want, rendering your lifetime subscription worthless, along with your lost decks. \- They have no affiliation with anki, yet they named themselves after it. Which is by no means a good willed act. I’m not seeing why there’s any reason to do so in the first place when the mod team has been doing fine with regulating the subreddit and hasn’t expressed difficulty in following their responsibilities. As the mod team pointed out, not even Dae was involved with this subreddit. The fact that they ever even considered this after all the backlash in the past few days is beyond concerning no matter which way you look at it. Ankihub did NOT need to take ownership of the subreddit to “use this as a more official support forum“ as they put it. While the intentions behind Dae and AnKing are likely pure, and I take them at their word, we have no idea what will happen in the future. My biggest fear is a large, educational conglomerate like Wiley or McGraw come knocking with a big bag of money to buy AnkiHub outright, and then where would Anki be? Add on that AnkiHub is a for-profit entity, and there is a valid concern from the community about monetization and long-term planning. What if leadership in AnkiHub changes? What if AnkiHub changes their own monetization process? The Anki community would have no recourse, no way to pull back control. Non-profits/foundations/charities have charters that legally bind them to certain commitments, like remaining open-source, minimizing costs, etc. A foundation does not have owners. It cannot be bought. There is nothing, or no one, to cash out. They only answer to their charter and their community. Moving from Dae to AnkiHub is essentially moving from a benevolent dictator to a benevolent corporation. It was easy to believe Dae because it was his project and baby. I have almost 100k cards and over a million reviews accumulated since 2014, I've spent so much time making these notes, what if things get...enshittified? But there's no need to panic. The two main programming languages that it's written in are Python and Rust. If you learn these, you can pretty much keep version 25.09.2 operational indefinitely. Since Anki is open source, nothing can stop us from doing this. Damien has integrated many of the most popular add-ons to be native to Anki over the years. This would include things like image occlusion, heatmap visualizations, and self-hosted syncing. Even if we never move past 25.09.2, Anki is extremely powerful. Damien has left Anki in a very good state to be forked, either by AnkiHub or the community. So first, let's see if AnkiHub keeps things open and prioritized for the user. But if not, here's what to do: - Make a note of the current stable ecosystem (which versions of Anki, AnkiDroid, add-ons, and OS you use are compatible with each other). Yeah, it’s helpful for getting your stuff together when you have too much lectures or readings to catch up on, but trying to get a refund is a pain. Reported a dispute with my credit card and was forced to freeze my card, contacted Mindgrasp support. Mindgrasp reached out to me saying they were investigating the situation to issue me a refund but the contact support manager named Moises basically ghosted me and it’s been almost two weeks now. I’ve sent emails asking for an update. I read stuff here about people saying to spam the support to get a refund but it has not worked in my favour. Two weeks dealing with this and my credit card is still frozen, can’t pay any bills unless I use my savings now. My credit card company is still waiting on Mindgrasp to reach out to them about my matter but no luck. EXTREMELY unprofessional on Mindgrasp’s part and it’s really getting on my nerves. Since my study material is massive, I can’t afford to be held back by these kinds of limits. I need to study an enormous topic for an exam that's about a year away. The material includes 9 massive books, each around 400 pages long (3600 pages total). Basically, full textbooks for every subject. To prepare, I’ll need to create at least 500 flashcards per book because the final exam is extremely comprehensive and lasts around six hours. I’m also looking for ways to generate detailed summaries, videos, or any resources that can help me fully understand everything. Some of my books include built-in questions and answers. Is this platform capable of identifying those Q&A sections and turning them into interactive practice, like asking me the questions directly? I have a Premium subscription and have had it for most of the time I have used Duolingo. I use Duolingo for practice, not as my primary source of learning. I also use the Brainscape app for Flashcards, using the decks that go with the Your German Teacher online courses. Although Duolingo will never displace Brainscape, I think the new flashcard sets on Duolingo are pretty great. But there is one thing that drives me crazy. When you are shown a flashcard, it should indicate whether the expected answer is a noun/adjective or a verb. For example, if you are shown "empty" both leer (like a bottle is empty) and ausräumen (to empty something) are correct. But if you guess leer and they are looking for a verb, you get the answer wrong. This would be an easy fix. Duolingo could either accept both answers as correct, as they often do when there is more than one adjective or noun with the same meaning. Or they could indicate whether they want a verb or not as the answer. P.S. While the intentions behind Dae and AnKing are likely pure, and I take them at their word, we have no idea what will happen in the future. My biggest fear is a large, educational conglomerate like Wiley or McGraw come knocking with a big bag of money to buy AnkiHub outright, and then where would Anki be? Add on that AnkiHub is a for-profit entity, and there is a valid concern from the community about monetization and long-term planning. What if leadership in AnkiHub changes? What if AnkiHub changes their own monetization process? The Anki community would have no recourse, no way to pull back control. Non-profits/foundations/charities have charters that legally bind them to certain commitments, like remaining open-source, minimizing costs, etc. A foundation does not have owners. It cannot be bought. There is nothing, or no one, to cash out. They only answer to their charter and their community. I have almost 100k cards and over a million reviews accumulated since 2014, I've spent so much time making these notes, what if things get...enshittified? But there's no need to panic. The two main programming languages that it's written in are Python and Rust. If you learn these, you can pretty much keep version 25.09.2 operational indefinitely. Since Anki is open source, nothing can stop us from doing this. Damien has integrated many of the most popular add-ons to be native to Anki over the years. This would include things like image occlusion, heatmap visualizations, and self-hosted syncing. Even if we never move past 25.09.2, Anki is extremely powerful. Damien has left Anki in a very good state to be forked, either by AnkiHub or the community. So first, let's see if AnkiHub keeps things open and prioritized for the user. But if not, here's what to do: - Make a note of the current stable ecosystem (which versions of Anki, AnkiDroid, add-ons, and OS you use are compatible with each other). I had a solid streak going. I even have subscribed to them on and off back when they had a good app. I genuinely liked it. But this? The new energy system? It completely destroys the experience. Not only do you lose energy for getting questions right, but it doesn’t give you enough to make it back when you get a streak of questions correct. Not only this, but even worse I finished a lesson with five out of 25 energy left and a little later without even touching the app it drained my energy to zero, preventing me from doing any more lessons or using my XP boost. Not only does it limit how much you can learn in a day it literally drains when you’re not even doing anything. This is awful. It isn’t about helping learners anymore. It’s all about creating artificial friction to push people into paying. And it completely killed my motivation to continue my streak, which is the exact opposite of what it was supposed to do. A few weeks ago, I was actually thinking about paying for super again. I currently use brainscape and make my own cards, and was considering buying the lifetime subscription. Things I like about brainscape: user friendly interface, easy to use and navigate, give time remaining on decks, ability to bookmark cards within a deck. Things I don't like: very expensive!!! difficult but not impossible to add photos. Things I like about anki: much much cheaper, many add ons, easy to add photos (I don't know much more, sorry!) You use energy even on correct answers, if you wish the challenge of learning a language was combined with the anxiety of running out of gas this is for you. You recharge a bit with streaks but not enough to replace the regular drain. Used to be that a perfect streak meant I could do as many lessons as I could maintain, now three lessons is the max, then it’s ads or money. Seriously despicable, this isn’t gamification it’s monetization of what was the free service. For people with the intention of buying the premium frankly the service isn’t good enough to rationalize spending money on, and with unlimited hearts/energy there is no pressure to get anything right and you’ll just guess without retention because you can. I moved from mobile to PC to keep advancing without worrying about each mistake I make, but with the recent changes I feel like I'll never reach the hard parts without paying. I've a 1500+ day streak it'll be a bummer to lose, but if the site can't keep its "free education" promise based on ads, or a reasonably priced subscription, I can't imagine I'll keep using it for long. What do you guys think? Maybe 30-45 minutes a day. It took a long time because I had to use my phone keyboard (which I'm really slow with). I kept thinking, "Anki isn't nearly as good as the people who recommend it claim. It seems to be missing a lot of the features. Maybe those features are only available on the computer version? Or maybe I'm using it wrong." I assumed that those extra features must be paywalled, so I paid for "AnkiApp Unlimited". Finally, I gave in and got (real) Anki on my computer. (It took me so long to do so because the current Anki isn't compatible with my OS, so I had to find which older version to download.) I thought, "why am I having trouble syncing? This is so frustrating! It says it doesn't recognize my account, not even my email? Must be bad design!" Then I found out that what I downloaded for my computer, the real Anki, is not associated with what I have on my Phone, AnkiApp. AnkiApp just stole the trademark (I thought that was illegal?) and confused me, a stupid consumer. However, soon after, the app started to crash when I try to make a new card/open/sync/study or just simply stay in the app. After around 10+ emails to support, they finally replied and advised me to reinstall the app since all my data is in their cloud. AND THEY WERE WRONG, HALF OF MY FLASHCARDS ARE GONE. All the hours spent making those cards- wasted. And I couldn’t even download the ones that I had previously that WAS in the cloud since it told me that the deck is incomplete and can’t be downloaded. Now i can't access my account in mobile and syncing doesn't work. Support is not answering. I know, my fault. While it may function like anki, i.e. an arguably successful SRS app. It has a lot of issues: \- They claim to have active premium support and also normal support, but they have neither. At least that's what i believe because it been days and i can't login to my account, or sync my other devices on IOS. And my tickets remain unanswered \- Admium corp. The company behind this atrocity, promises zero refunds and say that if your decks get "lost" or if your data got "corrupt" they won't be responsible. This means that if you have a lot of decks and suddenly you have no access to them because of some data breach or server crash, they won't give a shit. They also promise no refunds. ALSO ALSO they can close the servers whenever they want, rendering your lifetime subscription worthless, along with your lost decks. \- They have no affiliation with anki, yet they named themselves after it. Which is by no means a good willed act. I have a Premium subscription and have had it for most of the time I have used Duolingo. I use Duolingo for practice, not as my primary source of learning. I also use the Brainscape app for Flashcards, using the decks that go with the Your German Teacher online courses. Although Duolingo will never displace Brainscape, I think the new flashcard sets on Duolingo are pretty great. But there is one thing that drives me crazy. When you are shown a flashcard, it should indicate whether the expected answer is a noun/adjective or a verb. For example, if you are shown "empty" both leer (like a bottle is empty) and ausräumen (to empty something) are correct. But if you guess leer and they are looking for a verb, you get the answer wrong. This would be an easy fix. Duolingo could either accept both answers as correct, as they often do when there is more than one adjective or noun with the same meaning. Or they could indicate whether they want a verb or not as the answer. P.S.
